Quarentine

Horses exposed to many other head of livestock can carry diseases and be sick even without showing signs. When a horse is brought to Denali for quarantine, or coming from a new place, they are isolated for 30-90 days depending on sickness and level of health.

Temperatures are taken twice daily, a vet is out as needed, and the horse is put on a religious schedule of feeding and upkeep to ensure optimal health for the days going forward.

Rescues and Quarantine

Denali highly believes in rescuing horses and giving them a second chance at life.

There is a kill pen in Sunnyside, Washington that she hauls for, helps run and look at horses suitable to re-home. Any and all ages of horses come in, from foals and mares, stallions, mini ponies, racehorses, to retired horses that people don’t want to care for anymore.

What is a kill pen?

A good amount of horses at a kill pen are purchased by Kill Buyers (KB) at an auction. When a horse is ridden or run loose into the auctionring, the auctioneer will quickly try to run up the bidding price. Often, KBs—middlemen who represent or sell to horse slaughter plants—can be seen standing inside the auction ring, communicating directly with the auctioneer. They will then buy the horse for a cheap price, to bring to slaughter.

Sunnyside has upwards of 200 horses at each time, and the lot owner knows each one by tag number. Some horses are just dropped off by owners for the lot owner to take care of. If the lot owner has seen the horse be ridden or knows the horse, he will try and re-sell it to the public.

Are there risks?

Absolutely. But is it worth it? Even more so.

Giving horses a second, third, or sometimes, fourth chance makes Denali’s heart happy. If a horse is hurt, needs medical attention, or needs a little girl to love them, Denali helps find them a home.

A horse is bought from the kill pen, AS IS. Stating that, if anything happens once that horse is paid for and/or in the trailer, the new owner is in charge of that equine. Any arising issues or problems is at full care of the new owner.
